The Special Naval Landing Force were soldiers of the Imperial Navy, easily distinguishable from their army counter parts because they wore olive-drab uniforms and their black leather boots, rather than khaki and brown leather boots. Many in the Army turned their noses up at the SNLF, because they were Navy men attempting to do the Army's job. Corporal Takeo Shimizu believed they made good occupation troops, but didn't fare so well when actually fighting.
