Ed's a Major. State Alchemists adquire a level equivalent to that of a Major when they first join the Army. They can get promoted from there in case they prove themselves to be worthy. Their authority, however, is somewhat different, so a State Alchemist with a Major rank would have the authority equivalent to that of a Capitan.
