He played junior hockey for the Weyburn Red Wings in 1969-70 as they lost the 1969-70 Memorial Cup Final to the Montreal Junior Canadiens. Hubick then went to the University of Minnesota at Duluth from 1970 to 1972. Selected 53rd overall in the 1971 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, he played three seasons with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs. Hubick was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs almost immediately after the 1975 NHL Entry Draft took place. The Canadiens acquired the Maple Leafs second-round choice: center/left wing Doug Jarvis.
