After infinity wars, Disney decided to have a crossover movie with Star wars and Gurren laggan. This spawned many new characters to the series and many existing characters received major power boosts such as R2-D2 who gained a new look as well as new powers. This is generally considered canon except for the novels because who reads books anymore lol.
