Holding the rank of Captain (senior grade) in 1905 PD, he commanded the battlecruiser HMS Onslaught and was the senior officer of Battlecruiser Squadron 5's fourth division. He fought in the First Battle of Hancock. He was technically in command of the squadron after Rear Admiral Sarnow was incapacitated aboard HMS Nike, but the Onslaught was too heavily damaged to serve as a command base, so Sarnow's flag captain, Honor Harrington, decided to take over command herself.
