The user wait right before an attack hits before casting this jutsu. When casted, the user takes the mental damage of the opponents jutsu while making them take the physical damage of it. If the attack it a physical attack, such as rasangan or chidori, this works to the advantage of the user, as they won't suffer any damage from the opponents jutsu.
