Norman Hinshaw (d. 1915) led Paul Mantarakis and Gordon McSweeney's platoon early in the Great War, going from lieutenant to captain in about a year. He saw action in Kentucky, and participated in the Christmas Truce of 1914. Early in 1915, his company was transferred to Utah to put down the Mormon Uprising. During fierce fighting in Provo, Hinshaw was hit by a lit bottle of kerosene. His entire body was burned beyond recognition. After Mantarakis refused Hinshaw's request for a mercy killing, Hinshaw shot himself.
