Upgrades are used to improve your plane. The current upgrades have been available since SR2.5, after having been absent during SR2.4. Most upgrades come with a minor penalty to offset the bonus. Penalties originally included decreased cargo hold size, but cargo penalties were disabled shortly after implementation due to a bug.
