The Eastern Guard was a fortress in Mordor in eastern Lithlad that guarded the eastern entrance to the land, that Easterlings and Variags would have taken when being summoned by the Dark Lord. This fortress was close to the Eastern Desolation, and in the map of Mordor that Tolkien drew showing it there are roads passing through, such as the Khand Road.[citation needed]
