Bedford was a town located on the north end of the Bedford Basin, bordering both Halifax and Dartmouth. The fire department was formed in 1939. The first full-time firefighter was hired in 1975. In 1996, Sackville FD and the other fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
