This class is also known as the Sydney class, since several of its number were built for the Royal Australian Navy. For the duration of the war in European waters, however, most of the Australian ships are serving in the North Sea or Mediterranean. Only slight differences separate them from their predecessors: the deck armour was slightly reduced to allow the introduction of an armour belt with a higher quality protection. The addition of the armour belt resulted in a larger displacement.
