Unlike Westeros, Essos is not controlled by a single political entity. Instead its different regions are controlled by a mixture of city-states, nomadic tribes and a few small kingdoms. Essos is the principal setting for Daenerys Targaryen's storyline in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
