It is very likely that Wesker is in fact dead, not only was he in a magma pool but he was also hit in the face by 2 RPG's. However, he has died before and was brought back the developers could always bring him back if they wanted to, Wesker was so very important to the plot of the entire series it is tough to see who could become the antagonist.
