Brooks was born in San Francisco, California. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from the University of California in Berkeley, where she minored in Theater. She went on to earn a Master's Degree from Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York. She is also classically trained as a dancer and has studied and taught ballet, jazz, and modern dance.
