Joy is deaf; while she can lip read, she cannot hear and also uses sign language to communicate. Joy goes to Jack London Elementary when Julie starts fifth grade. She was a new girl at the school, and so Julie took a liking to her, knowing just how hard it was for her to be the new girl. She gets teased a lot by The Water Fountain Girls. Joy loves animals, and she usually walks three dogs throughout the park, including a poodle and a Chihuahua. Sometimes, Julie joins her.
