The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is a an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military. Its original name was Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), it was renamed to "DARPA" (for Defense) in March 1972. In 2002, following the Labor Day Attacks, the National Security Act of 2003 was signed effectively consolidating America's intelligence apparatus.
