In 1943, during the Second Great War, the Confederate Army succeeded in delaying the western thrust into Kentucky by the U.S. Army outside Elkton. Major Kirby Bramlette fought tenaciously and managed to inflict heavy casualties on the U.S., especially after receiving a shipment of "stovepipe" rockets from Lt. Col. Jerry Dover, but was forced to retreat.
