Lawrence Szilard was the head engineer of the Northern Lights program and recruited Daniel Aquino to build the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. After he realized the rest of his team had "accidents", he disappeared and hid his daughter from the government. After Root asks him about the Machine's location, Szilard is killed by Hersh's team before he can tell her. It seemed he shared Root's belief that the Machine should be free.
