Ensign is a navy-type rank for the lowest level of officer; Barrayarans who finished their cadet officer training started out as ensigns. Next after ensign in the United States Navy is "lieutenant, junior grade"; the Barrayaran military did not appear to have that rank and simply went to "lieutenant".
