The book is full of stuff like this, so, if an event like this occurs, probably, there's not enough info to draw a conclusion anyways. So, don't get stressed about it. It's a book, it'll have faults. Dumbledore probably knew there was a basilisk, but could never find the entrance. He can only identify Parsletongue, not understand it.
