Suvarnadurg was an island in the Indian Ocean, located relatively close to the coast of Bombay. From 1700 to 1729, it was a stronghold of the Maratha Empire, governed by Admiral Kanhoji Angria. After Angria's death, the island was taken over by his son, Sumbhajee Angria, who turned it into one of the major centers of piracy in the Indian Ocean.
