Despite its name, it is actually a large species of rhea that can survive in most habitats such as the deserts, grasslands, swamps, marshes, beaches, scrublands, savannas, and others (except tundra). It is the largest bird of the Americas and the largest species of rhea, about the size of the sub-adult African ostrich. It is the only species of rhea native to North America.
