Bernal Heavyhand was a Hearthguard and smith for the Sayer Iceblood clan. He was game in the leg from a battle at Imre's Ford. He was a good friend of Bregin. Bernal was a "great bald bull of a fellow" with arms as thick as a man's thighs, "a reddish-blond beard, and gold rings in his ears". When he was prepared for war he pulled his "wild mane of greying hair" back into a braid and tied off his beard with leather strips.
