The hockey department of Hvidovre IK was founded in 1966 and first appeared in the top-level 1. division in 1970-71. The club then bounced back-and-forth between the top-level and second-level leagues for many years. In the summer of 2009 a new professional club was established, named Hvidovre Ligahockey. The club played two seasons in the AL-Bank Ligaen under this name, reaching the playoff quarterfinals on two occasions. The amateur second team, known as the Hvidovre IK Fighters, remained in existence, and plays in the second-tier Danish Division 1.
