The Ëalar were immortal beings from the Timeless Halls.They were created by Illuvatar to serve him with the creation of eä.Some of the Ëalar had entered Arda and taken shapes or Fánar, these were known as the powerful Valar and the less powerful Maiar, their servants.Other Ëalar preferred to stay within the timesless halls or dwelt in the Void, some of these entered Arda at a later time and did not serve the Valar and were thus not considered Maiar, among these was Ungolianth.It is unknown if the Spirits of Arda were also Ëalar or yet of different origin.
