The Assassin Wars were a violent conflict that broke out on Ssan sometime after it made contact with the Federation. It was also a major event in the early career of Dr. Leonard McCoy. The origins of the conflict lay in the Ssani tradition of sanctioned assassination; for centuries, the Ssana allowed for assassination as a means of population control due to their high birthrates. However, the Federation introduced to them new methods of birth control, and this in turn reduced the justification for assassinations, until the government of Ssan decided to outlaw the practice completely.
