Buffer fields are energy fields which allow manipulation of gravity in a variety of ways. The Forerunners developed various applications for them, including keeping ships aloft in a planetary atmosphere, inertial dampening aboard starships, as well as generation of artificial gravity. It is said that anti-gravity buffer fields generated a sensation of pressure in the air.
