Berlin, Ontario was settled by German immigrants. The Canadians, embarrassed to have a city named after an enemy capital, changed the name to Empire during the Great War. The Canadians suspected the Berliners of disloyalty on account of their German ancestry, exiling them to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic to prevent any cooperation with the Americans. Empire was a focal point of the defenses in southern Ontario until it fell to a United States offensive in 1916. The Americans changed the name back to Berlin. US aeroplane veteran Jonathan Moss settled in Berlin to practice occupation law after the war.
