The Sorting Hat, also known as the Hogwarts Sorting Hat was a patched, dirty and frayed old hat that was used in the Sorting Ceremony at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry every year. There was a rip near the brim of the hat, with which it could talk and sing. Before each new student is Sorted into a House the hat will sing a song and bow to each table.
