The Firefly Festival was a festival held three days after the first firefly of the season appeared. Children went to the fields with ceramic sake jars to catch fireflies for their paper lanterns. In the night the villagers danced around a bonfire, wearing masks and striking massive drums, surrounded by paper lanters lit with fireflies.
