The USS Defiant was assigned to protect the convoy from a possible Klingon attack, as the Cardassians did not have the available warships to protect it themselves. En route to the Pentath system, Convoy 6 came under attack by a K't'inga-class battle cruiser and a Bird-of-Prey. One of the ships drove the Defiant away from the convoy while the other attacked the convoy itself. The Klingon Empire used the attack on Convoy 6 as part of a plan for Worf to be tried for destroying a civilian transport and extradited. (DS9: "Rules of Engagement")
