The Rite of Fira was the ritual of initiation into the Selkath Force-based organization known as Order of Shasa of Manaan. Students deemed ready to become full members of the Order were sent on a special quest that served as a final test of their abilities, reminding them of the reason the Order was founded and providing them with a weapon for personal defense. The Rite of Fira required the initiate to swim to the wreck of the kolto harvester destroyed by Revan in the Hrakert Rift in 3956 BBY. After removing a piece of cortosis from its hull plating, the initiate then used the heat from volcanic vents on the ocean floor to craft the cortosis into a fira — a curved, lightsaber-resistant sword, which members of the Order used to defend themselves against possible threats.
