Vera Kane was a recurring character in the first season. She was a religious leader on the Ark. Her church — in response to both the nuclear apocalypse and surviving in space — was Earth-centric, seeing "going home" (returning to the ground) as a type of heaven. The church keeps a small tree alive on the Ark as a symbol of the living Earth.
