Quartle (nicknamed "Quarters") was a young, male hare of the Long Patrol of the mountain fortress, Salamandastron, under the badger lord, Lord Mandoral Highpeak. He was a very animated and talkative subaltern. A close companion of Portan, the two were an inseparable duo. Quartle, along with Portan, assisted Tiria Wildlough ashore when she reached Salamandastron on the Purloined Petunia. Both hares were assigned by Mandoral to attend her. Quartle fought in the battle that destroyed Riggu Felis and his feral cat army, which freed the otterclans from oppression.
