The Great Salt Sea, also known as the Dry Salt Sea, was once a great inland sea, 3,000 years ago during the Fifth Age. After the Kencyrath arrived on Rathillien, the climate changed and the Great Salt Sea dried up, leaving behind huge salt flats.
