Jean-Pierre Bergerac (April 18, 1934 - December 8, 2009) was a French Air Command pilot and cosmonaut, best known as the first person to set foot on the moon during the Luna II mission on February 19, 1971. He became the first person to travel to the moon twice, going there on the Luna X mission in 1974. He was eventually appointed head of the Space Research and Exploration Agency (AERS) and served in that capacity from 1978 until his retirement in 1999. As head of AERS he was head of the Lunar colony project and unsuccessfully lobbied Emperor Albert II to fund an expedition to Mars. He passed away in 2009 after a protracted fight with liver cancer.
