Written by Joseph Bonaduce and Sid Dorfman as a teleplay developed from an original story from them and Norman Paul, the episode, which was directed by Gerren Keith, premiered on CBS-TV, first airing on September 16, 1978. The episode, along with Part 1 of the story arc, aired as a one-hour, two episode special season premiere.
