In Maori mythology, Te Parata is a huge monster dwelling at the deepest depths of the oceans. Its inhalations and exhalations are believed to be the origin of the tides. This myth led to the Maori designating the front of the canoe as the "parata" because it is the first part that touches the water, causing it to move.
