Vodranet (singular vodran) was an ancient Foitani term applied to Foitani who engineered their genome so that they could experience life as both genders. They were born female and became male in early adulthood. They produced a pheromone which incensed natural, single-sexed Foitani, who would ultimately become known as kwopillot, into a mad killing frenzy. They and the kwopillot became involved in a civil war which destroyed the Foitan Empire. Most vodranet were killed but thirty vodran colonies survived, and the societies of each were plunged into a dark age during which all knowledge of their history and the true nature of their physiology was lost.
