The coffin in the funeral parlor was first seen in "Through the Looking Glass, Part 1" in Jack's flashforward. The identity of the deceased individual inside the coffin was not revealed to the audience until "There's No Place Like Home, Part 2". Jack learned of the death through a obituary for "Jeremy Bentham", which he evidently recognized as the alias of John Locke.
