According to Father Callahan's scale, they are Type One vampires, meaning that they can create other vampires and can live for a very long time. A group of the Grandfathers were at the Dixie Pig to celebrate the birth of Mordred Deschain. They were part of the attack that led to the death of Callahan. Associated with the Grandfathers are the Cam Tam, who are also referred to as Grandfather fleas. They seem to follow the Grandfathers around.
