When Jerry Morton opened up his takeaway business in Victoria Street, Weatherfield, he'd negotiated a dodgy deal on the neon sign he'd ordered for the shop facade. Ralph, who worked for "Leon's Neons", erected the sign and called Jerry outside to take a look. Jerry was horrified that it was fluorescent pink and not red as he'd ordered, and told Ralph that the pink and pale blue sign made his business look like an ice-cream parlour. Ralph quickly got on the phone to his boss and told him that Jerry wasn't happy - and was even talking about suing for loss of earnings. After finishing the call, Ralph explained to Jerry's eldest daughter, Jodie, that his boss wouldn't be at all happy, adding that they wouldn't be able to do anything with a "Pink Jerry"!
