The Space Service was an Earth space agency in the 23rd century. When Leonard McCoy joined the USS Enterprise crew, Captain James T. Kirk suspected that it had been his divorce from Joanna McCoy that had turned him to the Space Service in the first place. (TOS novel: Spock Must Die!) It is unclear if the Space Service is an alternate name for Starfleet, or if the two are separate entities.
