Now an Italian restaurant, Smokey's was a popular gathering spot in the 1940's for the women who worked at Brill factory. It was rumored that the Portuguese owner, Richard, had ties to the black market, including a contact in the Portuguese consulate. In 1943, a 'Swing for Victory' dance was held at Smokey's, with Richard tending bar with one of his employees, Bruno.
