He was born on 13 October 1903 in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, the only son of Ahmed IV and Safiru Bashanimefendi. He became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Caliph of Islam upon the death of Abdulaziz II on 19 January 1977. He reigned until his death on 9 December 1983 in Constantinople and was succeeded by Orhan II.
