Refers to a method of controlling a synth, usually an analog synthesizer, from an external source by inputting a control voltage which determines which note will be played, and a gate signal that indicates the pressing and releasing of a key. CV/Gate interfaces and hardware sequencers were widely used prior to the advent of MIDI and polyphonic synths.
