The J-line was a line of genetic slaves bred by Manpower Incorporated of Mesa. J-lines, the most popular of Manpower's slave types, were bred to be technical workers, created with an emphasis on mental capability in mechanical things, as well as physical strength. W.E.B. Du Havel, or J-16b-79-2/3, was an escaped J-line.
