The Prince of Dor-en-Ernil maintained a series of towers along the Belfalas coast. They were located at strategic points such as promontories, cliffsides and islets. Their function was to alert Lond Ernil of a Corsair landing. Endil (S. "Mid-point") wass one of these coastal beacon towers, so named because it lay at the mid-point between Metrast and Dol Amroth, forming the most crucial link in the chain of towers chat followed the western coast til the peninsula. Situated on a lonely islet a mile offshore, Endil was, in fact, the residence of the warden of the coastal beacon system, and as such possessed a sizable garrison. The fortress of Endil was built in T.A. 1652, in response to the unprecedented seaborne threat represented by the Corsairs of Umbar. Like the beacon system of which it
