The Prince of Dor-en-Ernil maintained a series of towers along the Belfalas coast. They were located at strategic points such as promontories, cliffsides and islets. Their function was to alert Lond Ernil of a Corsair landing. Endil (S. "Mid-point") wass one of these coastal beacon towers, so named because it lay at the mid-point between Metrast and Dol Amroth, forming the most crucial link in the chain of towers chat followed the western coast til the peninsula. Situated on a lonely islet a mile offshore, Endil was, in fact, the residence of the warden of the coastal beacon system, and as such possessed a sizable garrison.
