The two cruisers of the Karlsruhe class were a slight modification of the Magdeburg class. Apart from the improved boiler room layout, it was almost identical to its predecessors. Both were put into service in 1914. SMS Karlsruhe fought a successful raider war in the Atlantic and Caribbean, but blew up for unknown reasons in November 1914.
