Irene Clarke was the ex-wife of Colonel Thomas Bushell. When Bushell returned to his home in Victoria unexpectedly after an out of province assignment, he walked in on his wife committing an act of adultery with Sir David Clarke. Bushell divorced her, and when it was finalised, Irene married Clarke.
